- Bottomland forests and swamps, often inundated for prolonged periods during the winter. Locally frequent in the Coastal Plain south of the James River, particularly along major rivers such as the Blackwater, Nottoway, and Meherrin; rare in the Coastal Plain north of the James, n. to New Kent, Middlesex, and Mathews counties.
