Comments
Native on dry rocky limestone slopes in extreme SW Va (Cumberland Gap), adventive elsewhere. A short note to this effect may be found in Banisteria 28:53-55 (2006).

According to Flora of the Southeastern U.S., "Lian et al. (2020, Mol. Syst. & Phylog. 148:106825) show that Cocculus as previously circumscribed is polyphyletic, and the two North American species are grouped with an Asian species, in a resurrected genus Nephroia. The newly circumscribed genera are morphologically distinctive as well."
Habitat
Mesic to dry forests, outcrops, and ruderal habitats. Native on limestone outcrops at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in Lee County. Otherwise, rare as an adventive at scattered sites throughout.
