Primarily restricted to higher elevations in the mountain counties. This species is conspicuously absent from the Central and Northern Blue Ridge (even at high elevations) and is more common and widespread on the Alleghany Plateau to the north and west of Virginia.
Habitat
High-elevation forests, balds, pastures, clearings, and old fields, mostly above 1070 m (3500 ft) elevation; occasional at lower elevations and in wooded habitats. Locally common in the higher mountains; this species is the dominant haw in the Mount Rogers–Whitetop area of the Southern Blue Ridge and on open ridgetops of Allegheny Mountain in Highland
County.
