- Rich, mesic to dry forests, boulder fields, Coastal shell-marl ravines, dry rocky woodlands, cliffs and bluffs, rich floodplains, and seepage swamp hummocks; strongly restricted to calcareous and mafic soils and rocks; most frequent on limestone. Frequent in the mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
