- This northern tree reaches its southern range limit in Scott and Washington counties. The introduced, Asiatic pathogen Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) is currently causing extensive mortality in ash populations in most parts of Virginia. It appears that the already uncommon black ash is destined to soon become a very rare tree in Virginia.

- Seepage swamps, fens, and rocky stream banks on calcareous or mafic substrates. Infrequent and local in the mountains (most frequent in nw. Virginia); rare in the n. Piedmont.
