- The native range of this species is centered west of the Appalachians. Its distribution and abundance in Virginia have increased greatly over the past few decades, and most of its favored sites were previously disturbed. The earliest known collection was made in 1921, further suggesting that the species is introduced here.
- Habitat
- Floodplain forests, mesic to dry-mesic upland forests (especially where disturbed), old fields, shaded or alluvial clearings, and roadsides. Infrequent to locally common in the mountains and inner Piedmont.
