Comments
Notable for its distribution, which follows the New-Teays river system northward from the southern Appalachians. Remarkably, it is not known as a native in Virginia outside the immediate environs (within 0.8 km) of the New River, yet within that limited area it is ubiquitous in a variety of moist to dry, rich to infertile habitats. Silverbell is frequently cultivated outside its native range, and sometimes escapes in the vicinity of plantings.
Habitat
Mesic to dry upland forests, floodplain forests, rocky bluffs, and disturbed habitats. Restricted to the New River Valley in the sw. mountains (Carroll, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Pulaski, and Wythe counties), where frequent to locally common.
Native Status
Native
