- Heuchera hispida Pursh and H. hirsuticaulis (Wheelock) Rydb., both stabilized, hybrid-origin taxa, are considered vars. of H. americana by FNA and others. Since they are now independent lineages with populations that occur well away from one or both parents, treatment as a var. of one parent is undesirable and they are best accorded species rank.
- Habitat
- Dry-mesic to dry, often rocky forests, woodlands, and outcrops of various geological formations; tolerant of a range of rock types and chemistries. Frequent to common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the inner Coastal Plain; rare to absent in the outer Coastal Plain.
