- Formerly frequent in the western half of Virginia, this species has been devastated over the past several decades by the butternut canker, a suspected exotic fungal pathogen. Large healthy trees are now rare, and the species has disappeared from many of its former habitats.

- Mesic to fairly dry, often rocky upland forests, boulder fields, and stream banks; often, but not exclusively, on base-rich substrates. Infrequent to rare throughout.
