Formerly frequent in the western half of Virginia, this species has been devastated over the past several decades by the butternut canker, a suspected exotic fungal pathogen. Large healthy trees are now rare, and the species has disappeared from many of its former habitats.
Habitat
Mesic to fairly dry, often rocky upland forests, boulder fields, and stream banks; often, but not exclusively, on base-rich substrates. Infrequent to rare throughout.
