- Field experience has shown that Lespedeza hirta var. hirta is the most widespread of the two vars. in Virginia, probably occurring in every mountain and Piedmont county, and most Coastal Plain counties. The map may reflect a few records in southeastern Virginia referable to Lespedeza hirta var. curtisii, but generally represents records for var. hirta.

- Dry forests, woodlands, clearings, and roadsides. Frequent in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
