- The varietal designation is not needed if one treats var. harperi (Small) C.M. Rogers as a species, as Flora of the Southeastern U.S. does; FSUS states that it is "probably distinct .... at the species level .... but needs additional study."

- Dry rocky woodlands and barrens over limestone, dolostone, or, rarely, metabasalt, calcareous sandstone, and calcareous shale; occasionally in dry, rocky pastures and clearings in limestone/dolostone areas. Infrequent in the mountains.
