- Comments
- The map includes all records for the species, which in Virginia includes three varieties: var. fistulosa, var. mollis (L.) Benth., and var. rubra Gray. These vars. have not been fully sorted out in herbaria and differences between the two more widespread ones (fistulosa and mollis) generally seem rather minor and in need of evaluation. Provisional, incomplete distribution maps for the varieties are provided, to be fleshed out with additional study and examination of herbarium specimens.
- Habitat
- Mesic to more often dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, clearings, old fields, forest edges, meadows, and roadsides; usually on moderately to strongly base-rich soils. Common in the mountains; frequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.

- Native
