- Likely native as the species was named by Linnaeus in 1753, before explorers had reached it's main range in the upper Midwest; see Castanea 63:88 (1998) for an account of the species' discovery in Virginia.
- Habitat
- Low, moist, graminoid-dominated floodplain meadows, with associates including Carex suberecta, C. pellita, Glyceria acutiflora, and Spartina pectinata. Rare, sw. mountains; known only from the valley of Reed Creek, a New River tributary in southwest Virginia (Ridge and Valley province).
