- Comments
- Treatment follows that of Flora of Virginia and Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (FSUS); see comments under Linaria canadensis. This species may be more widespread in Virginia than current records indicate because of likely confusion with the very similar Linaria canadensis. With a primary range is in the Midwest and western U.S., its nativity in Virginia and other Mid-Atlantic states seems doubtful. It is considered an introduction in our area by FSUS. It has also sometimes been treated as a variety (Linaria canadensis (L.) Chaz. var. texanus (Scheele) Pennell). Virginia herbarium specimens of Linaria (or Nuttallanthus) need critical evaluation due to the similarities between the two species.
- Habitat
- First collected by Fernald and Long in 1939 from "sandy fields and clearings southwest of Petersburg, no. 10,023." More recently, it has been collected in three counties (Isle of Wight, Nottoway, Sussex) by Chris Ludwig and in James City County by Lynn Loetterle. Apparently infrequent or rare in the Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont of se. Virginia. However, its distribution and status are poorly known.
