- Bogs, sphagnous seeps, and seepage swamps, generally in strongly to extremely acidic soils; at the few sites where this species grows in calcareous fens, it is rooted on elevated hummocks of organic matter and peat that are apparently much less calcareous than the groundwater-saturated hollows of muck and gravel. Infrequent in the mountains; rare in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.
