- Often listed as a mid-Appalachian shale barren endemic, however; it more typically occurs in shaly woods and roadsides in the absence of true endemics. Also found on metasiltstone/phyllitic substrates of the Central Blue Ridge. Endemic to a relatively small area in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia.
- Habitat
- Dry open forests, woodlands, forest edges, clearings, and road banks on shale (Ridge and Valley) and metasiltstone (Blue Ridge). Rare in the mountains.
