- Ssp. triflora (Michx.) Wherry with wider, short-acuminate leaves and sterile shoots well-developed, is sometimes distinguished from ssp. glaberrima. Researchers studying herbarium specimens from Virginia have not chosen to recognize varieties. See Comments under map of P. carolina.
- Habitat
- Floodplain forests, riverbanks and bars, wet meadows, and disturbed alluvial soil. Infrequent in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the inner Coastal Plain; mostly in the southern half of the state.
