- FNA attributes the similar but predominately western P. douglasii Greene to Virginia as an isolated occurrence in the Southeast. The basis for this report is unknown to VBA and would seem to deserve confirmation.
- Habitat
- Thin-soiled rocky woodlands, barrens, and outcrops of mafic, ultramafic, and granitic rocks, shale, and calcareous sandstone; rarely in xeric sandhill woodlands; sometimes in disturbed habitats such as rocky pastures. Infrequent and local in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the inner Coastal Plain; apparently absent from far sw. Virginia.
