- Comments
- Populus x canescens is a hybrid of P. alba and the European aspen P. tremula. Based on annotations to Virginia herbarium specimens by the FNA author for Populus, it is clear that most specimens of this hybrid have been misidentified as the similar Populus alba. Like P. alba, it is frequently cultivated and often spreads aggressively by root sprouts, largely replacing P. alba in the southeastern U.S. Critical examination of herbarium specimens is needed to ensure that these taxa are mapped accurately.
- Habitat
- Spreading or escaped from cultivation into fields, roadsides, forest borders, and other disturbed, open habitats. Frequent throughout.
- Native Status
- Introduced
