- The Wise County population is slightly disjunct from the eastern edge of the main range of this species, which is centered west of the Appalachians. The Halifax County populations are part of a Piedmont disjunction that extends from extreme sc. VA through NC.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry forests, clearings, and rock outcrops; usually, but not always, on mafic or calcareous substrates. Rare, sw. mountains and s. Piedmont; known only from isolated areas in Halifax and Wise counties.
