Two varieties, defined by differences in fruit morphology, are attributed to our area and require further study: var. crebra, of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains; and var. palustris, wide-ranging throughout e. North America and southward. See also comments under Proserpinaca pectinata concerning the status of the taxon known as Proserpinaca intermedia.
Habitat
Alluvial and tidal swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, seasonal ponds, ditches, muddy depressions, and other seasonally flooded habitats. Common in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
