Comments
The common name derives from the general absence of spines on the stems, and of hairs on the leaf undersides. Some variation in these characters exists and may reflect introgression toward Rubus allegheniensis. Both are highly variable and sometimes regarded as species complexes.
Habitat
High-elevation forests, boulder-field woodlands, balds, clearings, and old fields; restricted (or nearly so) to elevations above 1070 m (3500 ft). Infrequent to locally common (in high-elevation landscapes) in the sw. mountains, north to Giles and Floyd counties. Apparently isolated populations occur on Reddish Knob and Elliot Knob in Augusta County, Sounding Knob in Highland County, and Hawksbill Mountain in Madison County, but this species may have been overlooked (and should be sought) in other high-elevation areas of wc. and nw. Virginia.
Native Status
Native
