- The separation of Acetosa from Rumex s.s. appears to be well supported by molecular and morphological data, as well as divergent evolutionary trajectories dating back to the lower Miocene (~ 22 mya). See Koenemann et al. (2023, Molec. Phylogen. Evol. 182: 107755, 1-9).

- Sandy fields and roadsides. Rare in the s. and c. Coastal Plain and far s. Piedmont.
