- Sandy woodlands, clearings, and roadsides; in the Piedmont it often occurs on hardpans and clay soils weathered from mafic rock or acidic slates. Infrequent in the c. and s. Piedmont and inner s. Coastal Plain, north to Louisa and James City counties. A population's size can vary greatly from year to year.
