- Whether North American plants should be treated as a separate species or as a subspecies of European Samolus valerandi seems debatable. However, for the sake of consistency with FOV and Flora of the Southeastern U.S., we treat them as separate species here.
- Habitat
- Tidal freshwater and oligohaline marshes, tidal swamps, alluvial swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, maritime swamps, interdune swales, calcareous seepage swamps, rocky and sandy riverside bars. Frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains.
