- Recent studies by Max Lanning at Western Carolina University determined that most Virginia populations of the careyana/caroliniana pair are M. caroliniana. To date, M. careyana is known only from Scott County.
- Habitat
- Sheltered, seepy, rock face in rich cove forest. Rare, sw. mountains; known from a single collection on the n. face of Clinch Mountain, near Hilton, Scott County.
