- See comments by Fleming in Castanea 63:89-90 (1998) regarding probable native status of this species in vicinity of the James River gorge. A midwestern species known from a few scattered, eastern localities in MD, VA, and SC.
- Habitat
- Rocky, frequently flood-scoured river shores in the mountains, ruderal habitats in the Coastal Plain. Rare; known from along the James River in Bedford and Botetourt counties, where probably native, and from Henrico County and Newport News City, where introduced and weedy.
