- Although still abundantly represented by saplings and understory trees, this species has been seriously affected by the Dutch Elm Disease fungi (Ophiostoma ulmi and O. novo-ulmi) during the past 40 years, resulting in the mortality of canopy-sized trees at most sites.
- Habitat
- Mesic to dry upland forests, rocky woodlands, well-drained floodplain forests, old fields, and other disturbed habitats; typically on base-rich soils. Common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
