Several nineteenth centuray collections from the Middle Fok of the Holston River, alt. 2100 ft (July 1, 1892, J.K. Small), the banks of Staley Creek at Marion, alt. 2200 ft., and the banks of Cedar Creek, alt. 1900 ft. (both in valley of Middle Fork of Holston River; 1893, Small and Vail) have been called Verbena riparia Raf. ex Small & Heller. A little-known taxon now generally considered to fit within Verbena officinalis, it may be worthy of further study.
Habitat
Disturbed open habitats, low roadsides, alluvial clearings, and riverbanks. Rare in eastern and sw. Virginia as a naturalized escape. Native of Europe, sometimes grown for its ornamental and medicinal properties.
