- Plants with short, gland-tipped hairs have been called var. xalapensis (Kunth) Pennell. It occurs mostly west from the Ohio Valley. Though attributed to Virginia by Massey (1961), this seems to be without basis.

- Fields, lawns, roadsides, clearings, and other open or partly shaded, disturbed habitats. Frequent to common throughout.
