- Viola x primulifolia (lanceolata x macloskeyi) is sometimes taken up due to a lack of morphological distinction between the hybrid in the Great lakes region and "true" V. primulifolia of the Atlantic Coast region. Species status seems preferable here.

- Bogs, seeps, seepage swamps, mafic fens, sea-level fens, wet flatwoods, sphagnous pond margins, boggy clearings, and small-stream floodplain forests on acidic soils. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont; infrequent in the inner Piedmont and mountains.
