Relatively few specimens are known, mostly collected as Crataegus flava in dry, sandy woods near the Blackwater River around the turn of the century.
The Fernald & Long specimen (#6818) from south of Zuni cited by Phipps & Dvorsky as Crataegus cf. extraria in J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 1:200 (2007) is placed here.
Habitat
Dry sandy forests, sandhill woodlands, and clearings, especially on the higher sand ridges. Rare in local areas of the s. and c. Coastal Plain; most collections are from sandhills of the inner Coastal Plain, s. of the James River.
