Comments
A high climbing woody vine, very similar to Parthenocissus quinquefolia, that is native to much of northern and western North America, but largely absent from the southeastern states. Virginia specimens were collected as P. vitacea, but there is disagreement about the appropriate species epithet. Pringle (2010, Mich. Bot. 49: 73-78) reviewed the complicated nomenclatural history and concluded that P. inserta is the correct name; Moore & Wen (2016) in FNA12 disagreed. There is no clear answer, so we are following Flora of the Southeastern U.S. on this.
Habitat
Collected by A. Cusick (1992) in Allegheny Co., where possibly native. Also collected by Fernald (Dinwiddie and Prince George cos., see Rhodora 43:604) and Robert Wright (thicket along railroad in South Richmond) as escapes from cultivation. Additional collections from James City County (Jamestown Island) and Accomack County (Wallops Island) are also presumed introductions.
Native Status
