- Comments
- This northern var. extends south to the higher Appalachians and represents plants with fewer and somewhat narrower, ascending perigynia. It typically occurs at high elevations, and in drier habitats (e.g., northern hardwood forests, balds) than var. intumescens.
- Habitat
- Northern hardwood forests, spruce-fir forests, high-elevation cove forests, grassy balds, high-elevation meadows and clearings. The distribution and status of var. fernaldii in Virginia have not been fully assessed, but it is fairly common at, if not restricted to, elevations above 1200 m (4000 ft) in the Balsam Mountains of the Southern Blue Ridge, Virginia’s highest montane landscape (Grayson, Smyth, and Washington counties); Beartown at the northeast terminus of Clinch Mountain (Tazewell Co.); and Salt Pond Mountain in Giles Co.
