Comments
This species can be reliably distinguished from Sphagnum palustre only by microscopic characters of the branch leaf hyaline cells. FNA points out that some populations of S henryense lack the distinguishing characters, leaving no other solid character distinct from S. palustre. Anderson, Shaw, and Shaw's (2009) treatment of southeastern peatmosses found the distinction unworkable, and lumped S. henryense under S. palustre. For consistency, we are following FNA, which believes the species are still good, if problematic.
Habitat
Bogs, seepages, pocosins, saturated forests, and peaty pond and swamp edges. Widespread in the Coastal Plain of east-central and southeastern Virginia; apparently rare elsewhere.
Native Status
Native
