- In mesic to dry forests, forest borders, and clearings; most Virginia collections are from tree bark, especially of oaks but also of sweetgum, pines, and eastern red cedar. Widespread in the southern half of the Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont, with a few collections from low elevations in the southern half of the mountains.
