- Habitat
- The great majority of Virginia collections are from the bases and trunks of diverse hardwoods, as well as bald cypress, in both swamps and upland forests; rarely collected on shaded rocks. The species is widespread in the Coastal Plain and scattered in the mountains, but nearly absent from the Piedmont; whether this is a real phytogeographic pattern or an artifact of limited collecting is not yet clear.
