- Usually on rotting logs, moist mineral soil, dripping bluffs, or streambanks in mesic to damp forests. Confirmed Virginia collections are concentrated in the Coastal Plain and at lower elevations of the mountains; it remains to be seen whether the sparsity of Piedmont collections represents a biogeographic pattern or an artifact of limited collecting.
