- On tree bark, moist rocks, and logs in high-elevation forests. In Virginia, this northern species appears to be highly local in distribution; it has been collected only in the Balsam Mountains of the Southern Blue Ridge (Grayson, Smyth, Washington cos.), on Clinch Mountain (Russell Co.), in the Salt Pond Mountain / Mountain Lake area of Giles County, on Warm Springs Mtn (Alleghany), and at high elevations of Shenandoah National Park (Madison Co.)
