- On wet boulders, outcrops, and soil of seepages, stream channels, bluffs, waterfalls, and spray cliffs; also occasionally collected on burned and disturbed soils. Where it grows as a lithophyte, it appears to prefer limestone and other calcareous rocks. Scattered in the mountains, Piedmont, and inner Coastal Plain.
