- Comments
- This taxon was treated as a var. of A. purpurascens by FNA, and was lumped under that name in many past Virginia floristic studies. However, Cerros-Tlatilpa, Columbus, & Barker (J. Amer. Bot. 98, 2011) present molecular evidence that it is not closely related to A. purpurascens and warrants the specific rank it was accorded in most traditional manuals. Examination of Virginia herbarium specimens labelled "Aristida purpurascens" is likely to reveal additional records of A. virgata.
- Habitat
- Wet flatwoods, seepages, moist to wet clearings, and ditches. Frequent in the s. and c., inner Coastal Plain, north to Caroline County; rare on the eastern edge of the s. Piedmont.
