Comments
This discovery of this species in June, 2014, provided the first confirmation of its occurrence in Virginia, previous reports apparently being referable to S. leonardii (S. parvula var. leonardii). The latter also occurs on other glades in the vicinity. The nearest stations are in eastern Tennessee. Although wide-ranging, the species appears to occur predominately west of the Appalachians. Stems and leaves of S. parvula have a mix of glandular and non-glandular hairs whereas S. leonardii is glabrate with few, very short, non-glandular hairs. Branching patterns and leaf venation also differ. Morphology of the Rockbridge plants is unambiguous.
Habitat
Shallow soil and soil pockets on and around small limestone bedrock glades.
Native Status
Native
