Comments
In North America, this liverwort is found only at the higher elevations of the Southern Appalachians in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Also in Central and South America and Eurasia. Hicks (1997) argues that the Appalachian plants are distinct from those elsewhere. Davison et al. (1999) report that, in addition to its usual habitat on tree bark, this species also frequently grows on rocks.
Habitat
On bark of Fraser fir and yellow birch at and near the summit of Mount Rogers, where collected by P.M. Patterson in 1956 (Biodiversity occurrence data published by NY, UBC. Accessed through Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria (CNABH) Data Portal, http//:bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php, 2015-02-14). A more recent rare bryophyte survey by Davison et al. (1999) also found this species on Mount Rogers, although in very small numbers. They also reported this species growing on bark of Crataegus sp. (hawthorn) on Whitetop Mountain in Washington County, but it is not clear if the occurrence was vouchered.
