Comments
Treated as a species by Flora of the Southeastern U.S. and Flora of Virginia "for simplicity." However, this seems somewhat arbitrary since the taxon has been treated as a var. of both A. dichotoma and of the western A. basiramea. Pending modern molecular studies, we follow FNA and others in treating this taxon as a var. of A. dichotoma.
Habitat
Dry clearings, fields, roadsides, and thin soils on outcrops; usually in shallow, barren, or compacted soil. Infrequent in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; rare in the mountains.
Native Status
Native
