- This European species has long been known in the northeastern U.S. south to Pennsylvania, as well as in the West. It was discovered in a hay meadow in Frederick County in vegetative condition in July, 2014, but not identified until the following year. Apparently, the species rarely matures seed, but it's deep-seated, creeping roots allows it to persist and spread vegetatively. It is considered a noxious weed in some western states.
