- A European tree widely naturalized in temperate regions of the world and considered a noxious weed in a number of localities. In 2014, it was found to be adventive in an urban forest of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It should be regarded as potential invasive in Virginia, particularly in the northern Piedmont and mountains. See Simmons et al. in Castanea 85: 277-284 (2020) for the first report of this species in Virginia.
