- Comments
- Two geographically correlated varieties, in their extremes differing significantly in leaf architecture and number of leaflets, occur in Virginia. Var. copallinum ranges from NY to FLA, primarily on the Coastal Plain and lower Piedmont. The recognition of varieties is confounded by clinal and/or uncorrelated variation in leaf characters, and some specimens cannot be assigned unequivocally to a var. The current map is no doubt incomplete.

- Maritime dune woodlands, sandhill woodlands, pocosins, old fields, fencerows, roadsides, and early-successional forests; frequent or common, primarily in the Coastal Plain.

- Native
