- The map is incomplete at present, as many Virginia specimens have not been determined to variety; however, it conveys the predominantly montane distribution of this var., with scattered outliers eastward. Var. bicolor, with leaves less pubescent and more glaucous beneath than var. aestivalis, can be tricky to determine as glaucousity may develop more during the season whereas pubescence may be lost.
- Habitat
- In much the same habitats as the typical variety. Var. bicolor appears to be the most common and characteristic var. in the mountains and inner Piedmont, ascending to >1200 m (4000 ft) elev., but also occasionally ranges into the outer Piedmont and Coastal Plain. However, apparent intergrades and specimens of ambiguous disposition (due in part to the seasonal factors mentioned above) confound the distributional picture.
