- The first Virginia colonies were discovered in August 2021 along Cove Creek, Scott County. It has since been found in another ravine system nearby. In the conterminous United States this species is only found in the southern Appalachians, mostly in North Carolina and Tennessee but with a handful of populations in South Carolina and Georgia. Other centers of distribution include the state of Sikkim in northeast India, Japan, Formosa, and the Aleutian Islands. Rhizoids on the leaf margins are often noted as diagnostic for this species but they may difficult to find in some populations.
- Habitat
- Rock grottoes, boulders, and shale outcrops in deep, forested gorges along creeks. These creeks are surrounded by hardwood forests, thickets of Rhododendron maximum, and frequent rock outcrops.
