- This species is widespread in North America, Europe, and elsewhere. The Consortium of North American Bryophyte Herbaria has scattered, US Atlantic coast records from Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Vermont.

- Exposed clay on bank of James River, Chesterfield County; the only record to date (Hayden 6855 at URV).
